Ask Our Pros – “What should I look for in an Excision Specialist?”

On the topic of bowels and endometriosis, one of the most important things to look for in an excision specialist is how they remove endometriosis from the bowel.

Usually, a GI surgeon works with the excision specialist.

We hear many times from patients that they receive excision surgery and, though the gynocologist saw endometriosis on the bowel, they were unable to remove it because they cannot do so without a GI surgeon.

When this happens, a second surgery is usually needed to resolve ongoing bowel symptoms.

To have a “one and done” surgery, we recommend making sure the excision specialist can remove it ALL, no matter where it is.

In addition, an excision specialist should also acknowledge that their surgery is not the “end all, be all” to your pain. They should acknowledge this is an ongoing healing process and should be referring out to pelvic floor physical therapy.

Choosing the right excision specialist can make a significant difference in both your surgical outcome and your long-term recovery. Asking the right questions, especially about bowel involvement and a collaborative surgical team, is key to avoiding multiple procedures and ongoing symptoms. But surgery is just one piece of the puzzle.

Even with the most skilled surgeon, many people continue to experience pain due to pelvic floor dysfunction, scar tissue, and nervous system sensitization. That’s why a comprehensive care plan should always include pelvic floor physical therapy.
