Endometriosis can certainly cause painful periods, but it is not the only red flag.
Periods can cause discomfort and some bowel changes like soft stool, as the prostaglandins released, to cause the uterus to contract, can cause light cramping and softer stool.
The red flag for endometriosis is severe pain during the period that prevents you from being able to be in school, go to work, or enjoy social activities. The pain is usually debilitating.
Painful bowel movements or pain in the rectum/anal area is also a red flag for endometriosis.
You may also experience pain or urgency with peeing, painful sex, especially with deep penetration, and pain that radiates into the lower back or thighs.
Also, all these descriptors of pain do not always occur during bleeding! It can occur at any point in the menstrual cycle. The key is that the symptoms seem to come in a cycle.
Tracking symptoms for at least 3 months can help track cycle pain patterns.
Remember, you don’t have to live with debilitating periods or the constant disruption of endometriosis. Severe menstrual pain may be common, but it’s not something you’re meant to simply endure. Support is available, and relief is possible.
